Schwemme e. V. receives European funding for the NEB_PROJECT “LEHM – BAU – KULTUR”
Great news in Halle (Saale)! On May 8, 2025, Schwemme e. V. and the Center for Social Research Halle e. V. received two funding notices totaling approximately €2.4 million from Minister President Dr. Reiner Haseloff for their joint NEB_PROJECT “LEHM – BAU – KULTUR.” The funding will support the transformation of the more than 300-year-old, fire-damaged historic Schwemme brewery into a regional center for professional and lay education in clay construction, serving as a “third place” in the city of Halle
The roughly 40 current members of the Schwemme Association have been working for years to save and gradually restore the listed building. With European funding from the Just Transition Fund (JTF) and the Center for Social Research as a project partner, this model initiative is now being advanced further as part of the state initiative #NeueBauhäusler: “Saxony-Anhalt – Together for a New European Bauhaus (NEB)”. With its aesthetic, sustainable, and community-oriented approach, the project meets the high standards of an NEB_PROJECT in the Central German Revier. The NEB_VALUES and NEB_WORKING METHODS are consistently put into practice. The old brewery is becoming a best-practice example of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) vision: BEAUTIFUL. SUSTAINABLE. TOGETHER. #NeueBauhäusler.
Many people gathered in the courtyard at the quiet Schwemme Saale location to celebrate the NEB recognition and the funding award, including Mayor Dr. Alexander Vogt. With the presentation of the funding notice, Halle (Saale) has now become the third NEB city.
