City Park to Become a “Citizen and Energy Park”

Amid great media interest, Minister-President Dr. Reiner Haseloff delivered two funding notices to the city in the Central German mining region on March 17, 2025. A total of €1.36 million from the European JTF (Just Transition Fund – Fund for a Just Transition) has been allocated for the development of a concept to transform its historic city park into a “Citizen and Energy Park.” Together with its project partner, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Eisleben successfully applied for funding as part of the state initiative #NeueBauhäusler: “Saxony-Anhalt – Together for a New European Bauhaus (NEB).” The city is now the second in the state to carry the NEB label.

In a model approach, the next two years will be used to examine how the approximately ten-hectare, aging garden monument can be renovated and redesigned into a “Citizen and Energy Park” in line with the demanding NEB_CRITERIA of aesthetic, sustainable, and participatory methodology. At the heart of this study is the question of how to harness the area’s rich biodiversity for recreation and leisure while simultaneously balancing heritage conservation, climate protection and adaptation measures, and renewable energy generation. This complex task was the focus of an NEB_ONTOUR visit on the day the funding notice was delivered by the Minister-President. The day began with initial internal monitoring by the project partners, followed by a neighborhood walk through the park with guests and experts.

According to the university, initial ideas for the park of the future will be developed during the summer semester beginning in April 2025 by bachelor’s and master’s students of landscape architecture. These designs will serve as a starting point to gather suggestions and ideas from citizens for a park that appeals to all generations, reconnecting the people of Eisleben with their green space. The conceptual development as an NEB_PROJECT will be interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, and multi-level—this also includes a feasibility study on geothermal use. The municipality’s goal is to use the concept for the “Citizen and Energy Park” to advance planning to a stage where additional funding for implementation can be applied for using the prepared documents.
