Under the motto ‘City Park – A Park for Everyone. A Stage for Everyone!’, the partners in the NEB_PROJECT ‘Eisleben Citizens’ and Energy Park’ hosted a fourth workshop on 2 July 2026 – and celebrated the success of an exemplary participatory process together with the local community. In the previous workshops, participants had been able to work together in a concerted and focused manner – with academic support from Anhalt University of Applied Sciences – to gather ideas and wishes and to discuss them in concrete terms on the basis of student designs. The results now available provide an excellent basis for the planning work to be carried out by the commissioned landscape architects. The baton has been passed on.
The biggest surprise awaited on the lawn directly opposite the entrance to the city park, by the Gate of Remembrance: a mobile stage had been set up, purchased using project funding, thereby fulfilling a long-cherished wish of the city and its residents. Because in days gone by, there used to be an open-air stage right there, hosting a wide variety of events. The 4th Workshop provided the perfect setting to revive this tradition, featuring a dance performance by the Dance Devils from Polleben and a fantastic poetry slam performed by school pupils.
Before, after, and in between, however, the city park—protected as a garden monument but showing its age—took center stage. The aim is to carefully enhance and, in part, redesign it, thereby transforming it into an attractive, liveable park for everyone. At the same time, however, pressing issues of climate resilience and water management must be addressed, and the park must be adapted to climate change in the long term. A tough nut to crack.
Mayor Carsten Staub also emphasised the park’s importance to the city and the need for its further development in his opening remarks. Department head Sven Kassik looked back on the three previous workshops. These sessions had made it possible to engage in in-depth dialogue and to further develop the key priorities for future planning: these included enhancing plant ecology, measures to improve climate resilience, improved water management at Hühnschen Born, and new play and relaxation areas. University professor Trevor Sears was keen to emphasise how much the public participation initiatives to date would support the acceptance of the planned redevelopment.
With the conclusion of the project phase, the university is now handing over all the results it has produced, compiled into a single package, to the commissioned landscape architecture company Därr from Halle (Saale). Matthias and Christoph Därr are familiar with the city park. They presented their initial conceptual ideas on a lawn, engaging in a straightforward and approachable dialogue with the workshop participants and taking on board their suggestions and requests, such as the preservation of quiet zones, safe routes for pedestrians and cyclists, a playhouse with items available to rent, a dog running area, and the restoration of the sledding slope and the staircase. Everyone is eagerly awaiting the results. Let's get started on planning the 'Eisleben Citizens' and Energy Park'!
